Whether your homes just suffered from flood or from Lakeland water damage due to moist and pipe leaks, the last thing you want to see is mold and mildew forming inside your homes and endangering the health and safety of the family. Water damage is one of the leading causes of mold forming in homes and other facilities. Thankfully, there is a way to prevent such thing from happening.
Check the damage
When there is a water damage in your home, you need to check out all the essentials first. Unplug all electronic devices, including the gas tank. You must first ensure that safety hazards have been eliminated before assessing the physical damage to your home. Afterwards, you can inspect the structure and all the contents of the house. The rule of thumb is that everything below the flood water level should be thrown out.
Get the water out
You can remove the water from your homes by hand or with a pump or vacuum. You should shovel or flush out any remaining water, making sure there’s nothing in the slabs, basements, crawlspaces, and heating systems. Anything below the water level should be removed, not only appliances and furniture, but all wallboard materials (plaster, drywall, and paneling), too. You should remove all things damaged by the water.
It will also be helpful if you can keep a record of your activities before, during, and after the water damage was discovered. Write down your activities the past days, so that you can make an inventory later on.
Clean the affected areas
If you have a HEPA vacuum, that will be helpful. But in case you don’t have access to one, a simple wet/dry vacuum will work, too. Make sure to vent the exhaust air outside your house. Otherwise, the dust, spores, and other particles will simply be suspended in air and resettle on already clean surfaces. To make sure that all surfaces are clean, use a simple detergent and rinse them through low-pressure flushing. You may also simply wipe the surfaces with clean water.
If mold is still visible after deep cleaning the affected areas, you need to contact your Lakeland water damage restorer for an expert cleanup process.
Dry out the areas quickly
It is essential to remember that you must dry out the areas quickly because all mold spores need to thrive is moisture. When an area is moist, molds will soon follow. It is preferred that you dry out the areas within 24 to 48 hours.
